Psychiatrie Verlag

Improving mental health care together!

Psychiatrie Verlag is THE specialist publisher for social psychiatry. The term “social psychiatry” describes a holistic approach that takes into account both the medical and social consequences of mental illness. The aim of social psychiatry is to help people in mental crises and with mental illnesses, preferably in their own living environment, and to ensure their participation in society. The focus is on the person with his or her individual situation and personal living conditions.

In 2007, BALANCE buch + medien verlag was founded as a subsidiary of Psychiatrie Verlag, which has developed into a platform for guidebooks, non-fiction, experience reports and children’s books (the secret favorites of the publishing team) that support people in mental crises and with mental illnesses and their relatives.

Since the founding of the publishing house through the publication of the classic textbook “Irren ist menschlich” (To err is human) in the context of psychiatry reform (here is the full story “), we have pursued the goal of a humane, patient-oriented, preventive and democratically organized health care system, which also involves self-help in shaping the care system, training and further education of all professional groups working in psychiatry, oriented towards the needs of people with mental illnesses, the social and professional participation of people with mental illnesses and disabilities, and the destigmatization of mental illnesses and the people affected by them.

To this end, in addition to our publishing activities, we support and organize events on the topic of mental health and, among other things, regularly sponsor the DGSP Research and Young Investigator Award.

Our program is aimed at professionals in the psychiatric and psychosocial field (social workers, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses), teachers and students as well as people with mental illness, their relatives and interested lay people.

Through the cooperation with Paranus Verlag in 2021, self-help and innovative treatment approaches are strengthened. Psychiatrie Verlag has been a shareholder in utb since 2022.

Psychiatrie Verlag itself has various psychosocially committed shareholders, including the Federal Association of Relatives of Mentally Ill People, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gemeindepsychiatrie Rheinland e.V., the Dreiländerinstitut Jugend Familie Gesellschaft Recht, Stiftung Bethel, Psychosozial Verlag and 10 individuals (including six authors) who support the publisher in program development. The close cooperation with authors is a matter of the heart for all employees.
Psychiatrie Verlag – A publishing house introduces itself

As co-sponsor of the PsychOlympia 2021 (an event for psychology students), we have been given the opportunity to provide a short image film. Besides a short introduction of the publishing house, the following questions had to be answered:

If the publishing house had a mythical animal or real animal as a mascot, which one would it be?
If the publishing house were one of the “Harry Potter” houses, which would it be?
What is the publisher’s motto?
What date has the most significance for the publisher?
What is the most important virtue that the publishing house conveys?

Of course, we do not want to withhold the resulting video from the public!
