Information for those affected, their families and anyone interested

The purpose of this book is to provide information to help you understand depressive disorders and their treatment. We hope that the information and suggestions in this book will help you to better understand yourself or a loved one suffering from depression and – during this difficult time – to support them with love.

It is estimated that around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depressive disorders. Neither a ‘depression gene’ nor a lack of neurotransmitters in the brain is responsible for their onset and persistence – the truth is more complex: depression arises when a variety of biological, psychological and social factors come together.

With this in mind, this book provides an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the appearance, progression and frequency of depressive disorders. Diagnostic procedures, explanatory models, as well as treatment methods and forms of therapy are presented and explained.
