Why the flowering dreams of eco-capitalism do not ripen

The illusions of the green economy, the wishful thinking of an energy turnaround and an unbroken belief in technical answers to questions about the future: green capitalism is booming. But it cannot keep its promise of reconciling economy and ecology. It is proving impossible to overcome the ecological crisis within the framework of an economy of growth and plunder. The carousel of destruction of nature, acceleration and armament continues to turn.

Wigbert Tocha analyses the dilemma and outlines ways out of the entanglements of “more and more, faster and faster”. Keeping to the ecologically prescribed measure and respecting the limits of growth is essential for survival. The old “small is beautiful” of the ecological movement must prove itself anew in the face of the impositions of globalisation, which in the 21st century is being fought with ever tougher weapons. Regionally based economies oriented towards the common good are indispensable, with the goal of “enough for everyone” – and an understanding of quality of life that places time prosperity and empathy in our relationship with nature at the centre.
