History and Teachings of the Great Masters of Theravada Buddhism
Over the centuries, as Buddhism spread and adapted to different societies, some practitioners turned to the forest to return to the way of life taught by the Buddha. This is how the forest tradition reappeared in Thailand at the end of the 19th century. The life of forest monks consists of realizing, through contact with nature, the accuracy of the Buddha’s investigations into suffering and the end of suffering. The teachings of these monks gradually attracted many meditation practitioners, and their tradition began to take root in the West in the 1970s thanks to the disciples of the great meditation master Ajahn Chah. It was also from this branch of Theravada Buddhism that the practice known today as ‘Vipassana’ originated. This book is the first in West to recount the history of the forest tradition. Drawing on numerous evocative anecdotes, the author traces the lives of several great masters and conveys the essence of their teachings.
