How thought patterns shape femininity – on birth, sexuality and the power of expectations

Our perception of the world is not objective. Rather, it is influenced by socially conditioned thought patterns – so-called mindsets. These determine what information we take in, how we interpret it and what decisions we make. But what happens when these mindsets reinforce fixed ideas about femininity? How do they affect the experience of birth, motherhood and female sexuality? And to what extent do they reinforce existing inequalities – for example in the healthcare system and in science? The author takes her readers on an exciting psychological and feminist analysis of these internalised beliefs. She shows that ‘female mindsets’ are not only individually anchored, but also have a structural effect: in a system in which research on birth is considered marginal in psychology, in which women are rated lower than men for the same scientific achievements, or in which female sexuality is often only discussed when its absence is perceived as a problem for men.
