Foundations of Internal Skill
Building the Taiji Body
Before internal force can be transmitted, transformed, or expressed, the body must first be organized to support it.
Volume I establishes the construction of the Taiji body itself. The student learns how alignment, release, connection, suspension, settling, weight differentiation, and central equilibrium begin to reorganize the body from ordinary movement toward internal function.
The developmental path is deliberate: build the body, establish internal conditions, enter movement, preserve those conditions through form, develop structural continuity, complete the internal circuit, introduce spiral organization.
Traditional terms such as Song, Peng, Chen, root, central equilibrium, the kua, Yi, Qi, and the Six Harmonies are not presented merely as definitions to remember. Volume I asks what these principles require of the body and how they become functional relationships. What must change in me for this principle to be present?
Stillness provides an environment in which internal conditions can first be recognized. But stillness is not the destination. The body must carry those conditions into movement. As Volume I progresses from Wuji toward the opening movements of the form, movement becomes a test of whether central equilibrium, full and empty, Song, Peng, the kua, center, timing, and continuity can remain intact as the body changes. Form becomes the place where the foundation learns to survive movement.
First volume of the Yang Taijiquan Student Canon, a progressive four-volume treatment of Yang-family Taijiquan, moving from internal foundation through the transmission, transformation, and expression of internal power. Traditional principles and terminology are preserved while contemporary anatomy, biomechanics, and modern terminology provide a practical framework for understanding what occurs within the body.
