“How to really understand the purpose of aikido, this deeply Japanese art? This book answers this question that almost all neophytes, aikido practitio- ners and even aikido instructors ask themselves, or end up asking themselves one day.

But “understanding aikido”? It means to decode aikido, of course, but even more to go and capture its creative purpose, to extract this primary core of mea- ning to discover its maturity, and finally to integrate this vital core in our lives.

Then everything becomes luminous: learning and trai- ning in aikido, its mastery, allows an operation of “demining” aggressiveness and violence but also our own personal violence. Aikido is a pragmatic method for the development and cultivation of peace.

This book shows that it is possible for everyone to grasp the true meaning of aikido and to revolutionize one’s practice to go further.

Olivier Gaurin

Olivier GAURIN, born in Paris in 1959, started fencing as a child and aikido as a teenager. He was the youngest French 3rd dan in aikido at this time. Student of Christian Tissier in France, he decided to go to Japan in search of the sources of aikido after having finished his studies of philosophy at the St. Denis university (Paris VIII). He left in 1986 for three months... He will stay there until today. He will marry a Japanese woman and finally with his adopted country. He was then a student of the late Kisshomaru Ueshiba and of the great masters of the first generation after Morihei Ueshiba nof the central Honbu dojo of Tokyo. He was also a student of several recognized experts in Thai boxing (Muay-Thai), as well as in Kendo. But above all, he was the pri- vileged student for nearly 20 years of the late Chiba Tsugutaka, an exceptional master of daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu directly from the lineage of Takeda Sokaku. Olivier is now pea- cefully 6th dan in aikido and 5th dan in Daito-ryu. He teaches these two disciplines in Japan. In addition to his books on martial arts, he is also the author of several novels in French.
