Market gardening is a multi-faceted and multi-dimensional activity that cannot simply be summed up as the art of growing vegetables.

Organisation, planning, working the soil (or not), fertility and organic matter, cultivation itineraries, choice of varieties, harvests, facilities, income, physical and psychological health… In this practical and comprehensive book, Quentin d’Hoop uses his rigour and expertise to approach organic market gardening in as exhaustive and in-depth a manner as possible.

With a degree in physical geography from the Faculty of Science at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, an additional master’s degree in rural management in Portugal and an agrégation in geography, Quentin d’Hoop is passionate about the interactions between human societies and their environment, and it is through his farming activity that he approaches the concrete realities of local production, never far removed from the global issues of our food system. After living in Belgium, Canada and Portugal, he has been living exclusively from his market gardening business for almost 10 years in south-west France.

It offers a broad, cross-disciplinary vision, linking the exact sciences (soil science, agronomy, farming techniques and practices) with the human sciences (economic, political, philosophical and psycho-affective considerations), in order to reinforce the meaning of this activity without perpetuating illusions, so that every market gardener can draw inspiration from it, develop his or her own farming project on a human scale and sustain it over time.

A new, holistic approach to organic market gardening, combining agricultural techniques and the human dimension to (re)give meaning to the profession of market gardener:

– A comprehensive and wide-ranging vision of market gardening, covering practical and technical aspects as well as philosophical, political and psycho-social aspects.

– A multi-faceted presentation of techniques so that every market gardener can draw inspiration from them and develop his or her own “recipe”.

– It’s an opportunity to take a closer look at the conditions for realising a farming dream, without fostering illusions, so as to avoid the all too frequent early abandonment of new projects.

– Beautiful atmospheric photos, photos of farming operations, as well as numerous detailed tables, diagrams, graphs and illustrations help to clarify the subject.

– At the end of the book are crop sheets for 30 commonly grown vegetables (leek, lettuce, tomato, etc.) providing all the necessary information: calendar, sowing, planting, varieties, fertilisation, irrigation, harvesting and storage, yields, selling prices, income per bed, etc.

A well-structured, rigorous and expert practical handbook that brilliantly explores the various facets of market gardening, aimed at a well-informed professional audience (market gardeners) who have already set up or are in the process of setting up, people making the transition to farming or students on vocational training courses (BPREA) at the CFA, etc.., technical advisors and leaders from local GABs (Groupes d’Agriculteurs Biologiques, such as Agrobio 40) and Chambers of Agriculture, as well as those new to vegetable gardening or market gardening, such as the thousands of Internet video viewers (permaculture, living soil market gardening, etc.) who want to find out more about the realities of market gardening.

This book is designed to reinforce and maintain a sense of agricultural activity, but also to explore the conditions for realising a dream without fostering illusions, so as to sustain it over time and avoid early abandonment of new projects.
