How Europe became a failed political project and how to turn it back into a dream
Europe is confronted with a cruel war on its border and is at a crossroads thirty years after reunification and the Maastricht Treaty. In their essay “Endspiel Europa,” Ulrike Guérot and Hauke Ritz shed light on the development of the European Union since 1992 and reflect on the original European values and goals: a sovereign Europe and a continental peace order. They take a close look at the developments that preceded the Ukraine war and bring to light what was previously largely unknown. Ulrike Guérot and Hauke Ritz call for a rethinking toward an independent Europe that acts as an equal partner vis-à-vis America and Russia.
Hauke Ritz studied at the FU and HU Berlin. After his dissertation in philosophy with a focus on the philosophy of history, he increasingly turned to questions of foreign policy and peace research. He has been researching since 2008 in the course of various publications and since 2014 through regular trips to Russia. Ritz has taught at the University of Giessen, MSU and RGGU in Moscow, and the University of Belgorod, and worked for the DAAD in Moscow.
