Life inside a cult is not what we imagine, nor what parts of the media present to us. The reality of these groups is something else. So what is a cult? Who leads it? How does its leader present himself? What are his motives? How does he secure the allegiance of his followers? What methods does he use to subjugate them? What are the effects of those methods on the psyche? This updated second edition answers all of these questions.
The first part presents the cult phenomenon in general terms, along with the history of the fight against cults in France. A second part, preserving the anonymity of the people involved and naming no cult, presents various cult leaders, each met in a single clinical interview conducted as part of a judicial assessment, in order to analyse certain aspects of their personality. The question of psychological subjugation is then addressed, identifying the alienating methods and their effects on the psyche. A final part sets out the corrupted practice of psychotherapy within cults.
