An efficient, nurturing, quick and easy to build, inexpensive house that does not artificialize the soil, made of load-bearing straw and ecological materials, perfectly insulated and warm.

It is possible to become a homeowner without a large bank loan, thanks to self-build! In this iconoclastic work, Jean Philippe Valla helps you become aware of your abilities so that you can learn to build the house of your dreams in complete freedom. An inexpensive house, made of ecological materials (load-bearing straw walls, logs, plaster), quick and easy to build, solid, perfectly insulated, energy efficient, warm and… nurturing! The earth removed to make way for the house is used to build the roof, a cultivated roof that helps to combat soil sealing and the abandonment of farming. No prior professional training is required; all you need to do is practice and learn. All stages of construction are detailed, from design to structural work (foundations, wall erection, joinery, waterproofing, etc.), including the supply of materials. A manifesto that goes against conventional wisdom about the cost and complexity of construction.

Jean-Philippe Valla

Jean-Philippe Valla is an engineer by training and has been interested in all forms of self-sufficiency in food and energy for fifteen years. Setting up a farm was the ideal way for him to develop all his ideas. After teaching at the University Joseph-Fourier in Grenoble for around ten years alongside his work as an engineer, he set up in 2009, growing vegetables and rearing sheep. He writes: ‘Biogas was a real discovery for me in my quest for autonomy. Unlike the sun, it is always present, relatively easy to produce and provides a great soil conditioner for growing vegetables or cereals.’
