Institutional and professional history in the mirror of time

Concisely and vividly, the author describes the historical changes in dealing with mental suffering, madness and hospitalisation from ancient medicine to modern psychiatry. The focus is on the theory and practice of the subject in different epochs and cultural areas, but also on typical experiences of those affected.

In this history of psychiatry, which is both a social history and a history of science, the author reflects on the self-image of the medical, nursing, social and psychological professions. Numerous photos, case histories and historical documents illustrate the development of psychiatric care over time.
