Portrait of an Impostor

A striking portrait of Donald Trump organized around three major poles: lying, narcissism and destructiveness.

Who is Donald Trump? What motivates the quest for power of this man whom his own niece, a clinical psychologist, described as the most dangerous in the world, and his close adviser as an American Hitler? Drawing on abundant documentation and his participation in a Trump rally, Alain Roy offers a striking and disturbing portrait of the playboy who squandered the immense fortune he inherited from his father.

Contrary to the image of a successful businessman he sought to project throughout his life — an image crystallized by reality television — Trump has gone bankrupt repeatedly. An object of ridicule among the elites, he fabricated an identity as a “winner” to hide his flaws and his shame, eventually rising to the head of the White House. But what happens when reality confronts the impostor’s lies? How far can his rage and desires for vengeance go? In a context where a triumphant and unapologetic far right stirs around him, his aggressive and transgressive tendencies form an explosive cocktail.

Through the prisms of lying, the narcissistic rupture and dangerousness, Alain Roy plunges into the heart of Donald Trump’s psyche to discern the nature of this political figure who is at once grotesque and malevolent, forcing the whole world to play in a very bad movie.
