Between miracle and disaster
Electric cars are all the rage. Against a backdrop of ecological urgency, it seems to be the solution to the major health and climate problems caused by petrol-powered cars. For transport expert Laurent Castaignède, there is an urgent need to take the measure of the revolution underway. In the West as in China, is such a rapid and massive replacement of the car fleet possible? Will the ecological promises of the electric car be fulfilled, or are they in danger of being drowned out by a new environmental scandal?
For Laurent Castaignède, we are on the verge of accepting a new, green energy dependency, against a backdrop of unbridled economic growth. Going back to the origins of electric road mobility, the former automotive engineer takes stock of the current situation, where the pace of deployment is unprecedented. While electric cars emit no polluting gases when in use, they do pose a number of problems. It mobilises critical resources for its manufacture and recharging, for increasingly oversized vehicles. It also maintains the model of the self-driving car, with no change to the problems of traffic jams and the financial burden of road infrastructure on local authorities.
The rush to electric cars offers a credible alternative to the electrification of automotive mobility, one that is genuinely respectful of our health and that of the planet. Let’s try to ensure that the technological promises of the shift to electric cars do not end in disaster.
