Psychedelics, the Transformation of Consciousness, and Evolution on the Planet– An Integral Approach

A comprehensive guide to psilocybin mushrooms and their impact on our psychology, biology, and social development.

How—and why—do psychedelics exist? Did psilocybin catalyze our early human ancestors’ social evolution? And how can an integral understanding of psychedelics quite literally change the world?

In an ambitious and comprehensive look at psilocybin—and an inside look at how humanity co-evolved alongside “magic” mushrooms—Jahan Khamsehzadeh, PhD, explores our historical and ancestral relationship to psychedelics and presents new and exciting research about what psilocybin can mean for us today.

Separated into three sections—Present, Past, and Future—The Psilocybin Connection advances our understanding of psychedelics in unexpected and original ways. Khamsehzadeh shares compelling research that suggests how naturally occurring psychedelics may have played an essential role in humanity’s social, cultural, and linguistic evolution. Supported by archaeological evidence, neuroscience, and academic studies, he explores how mushrooms gave rise to art and expression, impacted spiritual experiences, and even spurred human brain development.

Blending the most comprehensive and up-to-date synthesis of psilocybin research with stories of his own and others’ psychedelic awakenings, Khamsehzadeh moves our understanding of the psychedelic mushroom forward toward a fresh, hopeful, and exciting future.

HOT TOPIC: Psychedelics are gaining mainstream acceptance and FDA approval. Recent legalization efforts plus work like Michael Pollan’s How to Change Your Mind and Ayelet Waldman’s A Really Good Day have made psilocybin more approachable for a mainstream audience.
EXPERT AUTHOR: Khamsehzadeh has completed a dissertation on psilocybin as well as years of study within the Mazatec Mushroom tradition. He facilitates legal psilocybin mushroom ceremonies in Jamaica, and assisted the Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy Certificate Training at the California Institute of Integral Studies. COMPREHENSIVE, RESEARCH-BACKED: Covering a range of topics, Khamsehzadeh explains the evolutionary and historical roles of psilocybin as well as the future via blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and therapy research. He synthesizes the most important scientific studies on psilocybin undertaken throughout the last 60 years. UNEXPECTED: Khamsehzadeh weaves in unexpected history and evolutionary science, sharing facts readers won’t get anywhere else, like: the impact of psychedelics on human speech and languages; the cultural impacts of psilocybin; and insights into questions like, “how and why do psychedelics exist?”
NOT YOUR PARENTS’ MUSHROOM BOOK: Khamsehzadeh’s work is future-facing, moving the psilocybin conversation forward in original ways–including in the fields of psychology, philosophy, ecology, evolution, and history. It concludes by speculating how greater awareness of psychedelics can affect society.
INTEGRAL FRAMEWORK: This book is the first comprehensive book to present the impact psilocybin has had on psychological, biological, cultural, and ecological development.
FOR EXPERTS & NOVICES ALIKE: This book is written for the curious mushroom newbie as much for the seasoned psychonaut or the psilocybin researcher. EVOLUTIONARY THEORY: The theory that psychedelics might have played an essential role in human evolution is supported in this book by archeological evidence, neuroscience, and the work of dozens of academic researchers.
