Transport and freedom

Being on the move. All the time. Could it be that fidgeting is the new disease of the century? Once the preserve of an elite, hypermobility has gradually spread like a virus, conquering all territories and social classes. While the proliferation of motorised transport promises comfort, happiness and freedom for everyone, everywhere, this sometimes pathological desire to move is not without consequences: accidents, pollution, urban sprawl, climate change and the risk of epidemics… Using a clinical metaphor, Laurent Castaignède describes the symptoms of fidgeting before tracing its origins, analysing its main vectors and exploring possible remedies. After all, a shock treatment is needed to combat ‘cruiseritis’, ‘avionitis’ or ‘autophilia’. However benign it may sometimes be, fidgeting can have deleterious effects. It’s high time we understood how our natural propensity for mobility got out of hand, so that we can cure this addiction as a matter of urgency.
