Can we work with a cancer patient the way we coach a top athlete? Can the motivational methods that brought French handball to the top of the world rankings be transposed to oncology and more broadly to health in general?
Researchers at the Paoli-Calmettes Institute, a regional cancer treatment centre in Marseilles,
have been exploring this unprecedented avenue of psychological support since spring 2016, with a trial programme developed in collaboration with high-level sports coaches.
The programme is called Rebound. Its name
illustrates its objective: to set people on a new path after surviving cancer. Participants are invited to set themselves goals and become more autonomous, not only seeking wellbeing but pushing themselves beyond their mental and physical limits. In the wake of the trial’s success, Pierre Dantin and Patrice Viens explain the secrets of their method in this book, which will
be useful for anyone dealing with illness and, more broadly, life’s challenges.
