In the Belly of Glaciers

Photographer, writer and specialist in glacio-spelology, the author takes us on a poetic walk to discover a little-known world, where nature has sculpted, away from human sight, a universe of vertiginous variety of shapes, colors and textures. Ephemeral formations, most of these cavities existed only for the duration of a season, changing from month to month to the point of appearing unrecognizable from one exploration to the next. This testimonial book is therefore nothing like a guide. It is an ode to that extraordinary substance that is ice, a praise to nature and an appeal to the one who contemplates it: we bring to the mountain a number of discourses — idealistic, realistic, romantic, mystical, patriotic, heroic, colonialist… As our glaciers now form part of natural heritages in danger, the author analyses the consequences of these discourses whose implications are far from neutral. His reflections lead him to a philosophical reframing of the concept of contemplation, the guiding thread of this work.

Jean-François Delhom

Born in 1962, Jean-François Delhom has experience that is at once sporting, intellectual and artistic. After studying art and philosophy, he discovered with passion outdoor activities and for a time became a trainer in caving and cave-rescue, as well as a canyoning instructor. From 2001, he turned to landscape photography which became his main activity. But constant attendance of the mountains does not prevent him from considering himself a man of culture before being a man of nature. Philosophy, the humanities and literature continuously feed his second life, that of a man in love with books, thirsty for truth, justice and beauty, seeking a luminous language to conceive them well.
