The call of the wide-open sea and his love of deep-sea diving however proved too strong for him and he went to study for a doctorate in oceanography and became a professional diver. One day in 1985, his life changed when he met Jacques- Yves Cousteau. Suddenly he found him- self on board Cousteau’s Calypso as its scientific advisor and, over thirteen years, worked on over twenty missions with the renowned deep-sea explorer.
