“I’ve never had confidence in myself. But underwater, I am invincible and strong. You too, I am sure, have a place where you feel invincible.”

For ordinary mortals, it’s a superhuman feat, at best, and a dangerous folly, at worst. Alice Modolo has a rather peculiar hobby: descending the length of an underwater line until she reaches its end.
She is the first Frenchwoman to free dive to the mythical 100-meters mark. The first man was Jacques Mayol, the legendary “dolphin man” whose life was the inspiration for the cult-movie, The Big Blue.

However, it is neither the accolades nor the thrill of danger that Modolo is looking for in the ocean depths. It is quite the opposite, in fact. Sinking into darkness is how she finds freedom. For to get there, she first needs to vanquish fear – fears related to childhood and family pressure, to social oppression and frustrated dreams, but also to the expectations that come with being a woman.

Her inspiring account is a reminder to readers that the key to true freedom lies within.

Alice Modolo

Alice Modolo was born in the foothills of the Auvergne volcanic mountains. Nothing predestined her to become the world-renowned free diver she is today. At 34, she is also a dental surgeon, a lecturer, and an underwater model, as well as the French and European constant weight freediving recordwoman and champion, and the world vice- champion. Her accomplishments, she says, are owed mainly to her mental strength, which she counts on entirely. She will also be remembered as the female star of Beyoncé’s breathtaking underwater video, Runnin’.
