A Search and Find book from the collective accommodation

Thousands of people who must flee the war in Ukraine and other countries seek shelter in Switzerland. The wimmelbook shows everyday as well as unexpected aspects of living together in a collective accommodation and also provides space to imagine a more carefree arrival “between worlds”.

How do people who have fled live when they have just arrived with us? Which other people do they meet in their first, provisional accommodation? What are the challenges in their new everyday life—and who helps them to find their feet? The wimmelbook “Zwischen Welten” was created in the Temporary Accommodation Viererfeld in Bern. This collective accommodation was set up under the direction of the Health, Social and Integration Directorate of the Canton of Bern in the months following the outbreak of the war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022 in order to create more space for refugees. Initially mostly Ukrainians, and later asylum seekers from other countries, found a temporary home in the accommodation. The wimmelbook was drawn by the Ukrainian student and illustrator Sofija Borsch. Also having fled to Switzerland before the war, she works as a classroom assistant in the school of the collective accommodation. She has packaged her observations, experienced stories and wishes into the seven wimmel pictures of this book. In this way she shows a place not only of waiting and despair, but of connection, hope and moments in which life is celebrated. Based on personal experience, the wimmelbook offers points of departure for engaging with a reality of life that takes place very close to us and yet remains closed off to most.

The notice board is a hub in the collective accommodation, where residents find information for their new everyday life and, in small ways, what is going on becomes visible. Look closely: can you find the pictured objects, people and animals on the double pages in the wimmelbook? And who does what at the events announced on the information board?
