This book follows holistic psychiatrist, David Kopacz’s initiation into a pathway of a living spirituality from medicine man, Joseph Rael. As David learns from Joseph, he shares that learning with us. In trying to understand the process of becoming a mystic, a visionary, and a shaman, David draws on the teachings of Jung, Corbin, Rumi, Whitman, Alice & John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and the mystical branches of indigenous, Christian, Sufi, and Hindu teachings. Initiation is the way of learning ancient wisdom that has been passed down from generation to generation back from the beginning. It is a circular pathway, like the medicine wheel, that starts where we are, disorients us through a separation from who we think we are, initiating us into a new way of being, and returning us back to where we started, but now transformed, seeing the world through new eyes and having a new sense of purpose and responsibility to promote spiritual democracy.

David R. Kopacz, MD is a psychiatrist at Seattle VA in primary care mental health integration and a whole health education champion with the national VA Office of Patient Centered Care & Cultural Transformation. He is board certified in holistic & integrative medicine and an assistant professor at the University of Washington. David has worked in many different practice settings, including VA, holistic private practice, and as clinical director at Buchanan Rehabilitation Centre in Auckland, New Zealand.
