If learning is a primordial act, transmitting, teaching, and training new ge- nerations of aikidoka cannot be accomplished naturally or neutrally. There is no «normal» way to transmit knowledge.

How can we find the right balance between different educational ap- proaches? Where does the word that helps end and the word that hin- ders begin? If, as Confucius said, «the more the master teaches, the less the student learns,» how can we leave room for the development of each learner’s unique potential?

Aikido does not perpetuate itself because it is more modern or more ef- fective; it is transmitted from generation to generation wherever we know how to bring out its timeless, universally shareable qualities across space, time, and cultures.
This book aims to clarify educational issues and allow each teacher to make their own choices in the profusion of schools, approaches, tradi- tions, and pedagogies.
