These two words – the intimate and the bedroom – seem inextricably linked, especially as their origins are quite concomitant. At the dawn of the 18th century, when there was a bedroom, it was not yet a place of intimacy. A century later, while flats were composed of practically the same series of rooms, customs had changed. People no longer live in their homes in the same way, and certain rooms have been made sacred; the bedroom is one of them. In order to better account for this, this book proposes to explore the 18th century from one side to the other, to look for traces of the transformation of minds and customs, to question the continuities as well as the ruptures.
