A Lifeline Through the Ages

What teems with life in and around a river?

In this Wimmelbook, the Baden-based illustrator Julien Gründisch traces the history of a river from its origins to the present day.

For this hidden-object book, Gründisch drew inspiration from the history and current developments of his home river, the Limmat. The hidden object illustrations drawn for the book depict typical scenes and developments. The result: seven impressive double-page spreads.

To accompany the book, the publisher vatter&vatter is continuously providing further information and background knowledge. Initial information texts on the topics are available at www.wimmelbuch.ch.

The Baden illustrator Julien Gründisch traces in this Wimmelbook the history of a river from its formation to today and into the near future. Because whether human or animal, much teems on and in a river, sometimes more, sometimes less. What fits into the drawn time and where has the illustrator’s imagination run away? Much can be discovered in the river bustle! For this Wimmelbook the illustrator was inspired by his home river, the Limmat, and advised by many specialists. What does the bustle on your river look like? What river stories do you know?

Dive into the history of our rivers on the seven double pages of this Wimmelbook:

Formation: With the retreat of the glaciers our rivers were formed.

Use: Over millennia people have used natural rivers in many ways. The destructive floods, however, were feared.

Containment: At the beginning of the 20th century many rivers were straightened and canalized to gain land and protect possessions from floods.

Condition today: Rivers are important recreational places for us. In nature the consequences of canalization become apparent: the diversity of animals and plants has massively decreased.

Revitalization: With a renewed structural intervention the river is freed from its corset. This makes it more natural and lively again.

Future: In the revitalized river life has returned. In and at the water it teems with animals and people also enjoy it.

Close-up: The view from and under the water shows the wealth and diversity of a near-natural river.
