How The Microbiome Controls Our Immune Response And Prevents Inflammation

Our immune system, which has evolved over millions of years, is calibrated for a meagre life close to nature. In our modern society, under the influence of highly processed food, high-performance

medicine and lack of contact with nature, the immune system gets messed up more and more. The result: Millions of people suffer from allergies, autoimmune diseases and food intolerances that hardly existed in the past. The common denominator of these diseases is chronic inflammatory processes.

The immunologist and parasitologist Professor Lucius reveals the exciting molecular and immunological connections that lead to the development of disease by familiarising us with our inner ecosystem. It has been known for about 10 years that every human being has about a thousand different types of bacteria on and in him or her. This microbiome communicates with the immune, nervous and hormonal systems and influences us in subtle ways. If we do not treat it with care, it becomes impoverished and, much like our external environment, suffers from loss of biodiversity – and can no longer protect us from inflammatory diseases.

In an equally vivid and entertaining way, this book shows us how aspects of our modern lifestyle have a negative impact on our microbiome and thus our immune responses. The good news is: there are numerous ways to maintain or restore the delicate balance of our inner ecosystem.

  • Explanations for scientific laymen– told in a clear and exciting way
  • Practical approaches to prevent and heal a microbiome out of balance
  • Includes online bonus material on immunology and immune tolerance, among other topics
