Confronting the New Authoritarian Wave

Rising inequality, loss of confidence in democratic institutions, rejection of migrants, transformations of the digital public sphere, attraction to authoritarian figures… The return of fascism we are witnessing is not a simple repetition of that of the last century, but draws on an equally intoxicating soil. If its manifestations are not always as spectacular, it is because we are sometimes dealing with a “quiet” fascism that sneaks insidiously into our daily interactions, into controversies in the media space and into our imaginaries, to the point of achieving an unfortunate feat: appearing ordinary, even harmless.

Exposing the mechanisms that favor the rise of authoritarian and reactionary currents, particularly in the United States, Jonathan Durand Folco clearly shows how fascism must be understood on a continuum marked by different stages. Faced with the blurring of boundaries between the traditional conservative right and far-right ideas, we more than ever need clarity. Confronting the new authoritarian wave cannot be reduced to defending the established order and the liberal model: this shift must be considered an opportunity to profoundly reinvent our ways of life, our institutions, and our imaginaries.
