All of Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater is in the porosity of the visible and the repressed, the chaste and the grotesque, images that insist on the in-between dream of consciousness, the dance of our mental images. Guy Delaha’s photographs, taken during the performances of Tanztheater Wuppertal, are a precipitate of a fever to which Pina Bausch and her fabulous performers have given the body of an excessive, epic and human adventure. “It’s beautiful when you see someone living”, Pina simply remarked one day when she asked her dancers to do “one thing with [their] breath”. Against the asphyxia of the sensitive, images come to breathe here, they already leave the pages that contain them to continue their free journey in the memory.
