Natural Architecture presents a series of buildings that dialogue directly with the natural world through their location, the materials used and the limited use of non-craft techniques. They are works that take advantage of the resources of a place, the specific characteristics of a site, as well as growth processes and spontaneous and accidental phenomena. They question our sense of nature, challenge our sensibilities and prejudices to suggest a less confrontational and careless, more gentle and benevolent approach to the natural environment. We wanted to invite the reader, visitor of this small paper museum, to experience surprising spaces, raw materials, penetrating smells, which open new lines of thought on the relationship that our civilization and each of us have with nature. These works deal with ecology, landscape and the environment, approached with the means of art: few direct messages, therefore, but a strong capacity to propose new approaches, in connection with the psychology, sensitivity and culture of contemporary man. Another subject of fascination is the singular, harsh and often disturbing beauty of these works, which is strongly conveyed by the drawings, photographs and reports. The authors of these works oscillate between several currents of contemporary art – Art in Nature above all, but also Land Art, Earth Art, environmental art, Bio-art, conceptual art – and belong to various cultures and countries. There is a strong presence of the Anglo-Saxon world, counterbalanced by a significant representation of artists from Japan and almost all the major European countries: Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Scandinavia. Works by : Jackie Brookner, Gilles Bruni & Marc Babarit, Patrick Dougherty, Chris Drury, Olafur Eliasson, Ex.Studio, Mikael Hansen, Ichi Ikeda,Yutaka Kobayashi, Giuliano Mauri, François Méchain, nArchitects, David Nash, Edward Ng, Nils-Udo, Sanfte Strukturen, Armin Schubert. Alessandro Rocca, architect, writes articles and books, designs architectural and landscape projects, and teaches architecture at the Politecnico of Milan, where he is scientific coordinator of the Aip (architecture, infrastructure, landscape) research group. He is currently interested in the relationship between architectural design and nature, which he considers to be the most promising and creative issue for radically renewing our way of thinking about architecture, landscape and the world we live in.
