The art of Japanese dolls

Kokeshi dolls are small wooden figurines that have become one of the symbols of Japan. Simple in shape, with no arms or legs, and originally intended for children’s games, they are part of popular culture. Handcrafted, with different styles despite their apparent uniformity, they have become collectibles and souvenirs that tourists and Japanese people love to give as gifts. This book presents the art of kokeshi, which dates to the 19th century and is mainly produced in north-eastern Japan (Tohoku) by around 180 traditional craft workshops. The author takes us inside these workshops to meet the artisans and discover their manufacturing processes, which require several years of training. She presents and describes, through beautiful photographs, the different styles, both traditional and modern, and shares with us her familiarity and enthusiasm for the world of kokeshi.
