As one of mankind’s oldest useful plants, hemp as a renewable raw material harbours a wide range of opportunities to reshape the economy. The agricultural and construction industries in particular harbour enormous potential for meeting national and international climate targets – and hemp can be the bridge. Nowadays, construction is primarily characterised by high energy consumption, high material consumption, short durability, a lot of synthetic waste and low building biology value. “Building with hemp” describes in a practical and generally understandable way the many possible uses of this natural and renewable raw material, which can be used as an insulating material or as a solid building material in almost all areas of house construction. It deals with the ecological and physical advantages of hemp, tried and tested construction options and various hemp construction methods. Whether solid construction or timber construction, residential or industrial buildings, new builds or renovations – hemp is ideally suited as a sustainable, healthy and recyclable building material and also as a key building block for future regional bio-economies.
