Cats first made their way to Japan via the Silk road in the 6th century, simultaneously with the rise of the
Buddhist philosophy. Seen as a sign of good fortune, the animal established itself in every household of the
peninsula in the form of the maneki-neko, the famous cat with a raised paw. Cats therefore hold a special
place in the Japanese folklore and popular culture, as well as through centuries of artistic and literary
tradition, from the pages of the Tale of Genji to the prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige.
These furry friends are intriguing, as much by their ambivalence, their independence and their indomitable
character. At times cuddly, at times scornful, but always unpredictable, they grace us with their presence
whenever they wish and have their every whim satisfied simply by purring.
