The ensō. Behind this magnetic and mysterious word lies an age-old art practised by Buddhist monks in Zen monasteries. This intuitive gesture engages the body in a circular movement to trace the circle of plenitude. This traditional Zen practice leads us to focus our attention on the present moment, helping to unify body and mind.
Nita Bard-Burguy’s writing leaves no word, breath or exercise to chance, inviting us to practise and experience this ancient Japanese wisdom. For those seeking a more authentic way of looking at life, ensō is a way of returning to what is central to us: silence and breath.
The text is illustrated by the works of Japanese artist Izumi Kohama, and accompanied by photos and a glossary to complete this introduction to the Zen practice of ensō.

Nita Bard-Burguy

Nita Bard-Burguy has been lucky enough to practise different spiritual paths with Japanese and Chinese masters. Her exceptional encounters, including that with the Japanese Master Taisen Deshimaru, one of the main transmitters of Zen Buddhism to the West, led her to deepen her experience and share this Zen meditative art: ensō.
