A Tribute to Indigenous Elders and Their Lifeways
SANTA FE, N.M. — In an era marked by ecological crises and cultural upheaval, the
forthcoming book Grandmothers’ Wisdom offers a profound tribute to the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, a pioneering global alliance formed in 2004 to safeguard our planet and envision a sustainable future for the next seven generations. This compelling guidebook, set for publication by Synergetic Press on September 17, 2024, is a living portrayal of these elders’ rich lives and enduring wisdom.
With a foreword by environmental activist Vandana Shiva and tributes to the grandmothers who have passed on, Grandmothers’ Wisdom delves into the personal histories of these thirteen remarkable women. The book explores their upbringing, their painful encounters with colonial violence and forced assimilation, and their inspiring journeys into activism and cultural preservation.
The grandmothers featured in this book are revered keepers of traditional medicine and Indigenous spirituality. Their knowledge spans ancient wisdom traditions and ecological practices that have nurtured our planet for millennia. From the Amazon rainforest to the highlands of Central America, the Sierra Madre of Oaxaca, the plains, deserts, and canyons of North America, the Himalayan mountains of Tibet and Nepal, and the forests of Central Africa, their stories are as diverse as the landscapes they inhabit. The award-winning photography within these pages captures the grandmothers in moments of offering, cleansing, and healing, showcasing their deep connection to the earth and their commitment to stewarding its medicines.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, a special event titled We Are All Related: Unearthing the Roots of Our Shared Humanity will be held from October 24-27 at the Pueblo of Pojoaque – Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This four-day celebration will feature the participation of founding members of the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous
Grandmothers and special guests, including Dr. Henrietta Mann, who penned the introduction for the newly revised edition of Grandmothers’ Wisdom, and Dr. Vandana Shiva, who authored the new foreword. The event will also serve as the official launch for Synergetic
Press’ first edition of this significant work.
